Being a nanny is a little above and beyond being a babysitter...there's a more regular schedule than the occasional evening, and some household chores are usually required when you accept a nanny position.
If a family hired you as a nanny and required you to do light housework, what kind of chores do you think this would typically include?

Well that would depend on the job itself. Right now im a part-time, on call nanny as you know, and my job is primarly for the child, which includes teaching, but other than that, I also help out with the yard work since the house they moved into is practically a nursery and they could use the help, but i offered that because I felt it would stregnthen my working bond between her mother and I as well, to show her that I can multitask. However, i do not do any other chores because they also have a cleaning lady.
I also think that the chores would include primarly doing laundry and such, and helpiung to make sure the child's surroundings are sanitary since he/she is your primary charge.

Do nannies just take care of the kids or do they actually try to make them into better people as well? I think I've been watching a tad bit too much Super Nanny.

lol! Whether babysitter or nanny, we have a responsibility when we spend time with children to help instill good values and morals within them.
It depends on the nanny, too. I'm sure we've all heard of cases of children actually being raised by their nanny...kids who see their parents maybe 5 hours total in a week, and even then don't get their parent's time of day.
I love that show, by the way. A little too dramatic for my taste some times (but that's TV!), and it is horrifying to know that some (albeit, very few) parents let their kids get THAT out of hand.

I dont think nannies should have to do chores. Taking care of the child is enough, if your a live in, thats different, laundry and dishes and keeping the area the children play in clean is about it. Laundry should only be the childs and should only be done when the nanny has time.

I started beeing a Nanny with an Au pair Job (live in Nanny from a different country) in July03 and stayed with a family for 2years. In this time my job was mostly to take care of the kids, entertainm them and make sure that they´re safe! I also talked only in German to them so they would learn the language! When I left the Baby (now 2) spoke mostly in German and the boy (now 5) understands 90% from what I say in German!
Families can tell Au pairs to do the laundry from the kids, but my Hostparents never told me to!
Right now I´m working for two families! In the one family I´m only a Babyistter, 14h a week and my job is to have the kids happy and safe. I talk with them a little bit in German.
For another Family I watch the kids around 20-30h/week. The 2year olds sleep for 2-3h. In this time I normally vacuum the floor, wipe the kitchen, clean the counters...just make sure that the kitchen and living room is clean! The parents asked me if I would mind doing some things and I don´t care. I have plenty of time (the Baby is so easy!) and I really like the family and get a lot back!
I think it all depends on the pay, the kids, the family....if I like a family and they ask me to do things I have no problem to help them with cleaning the house. For me the kids alwys come first and if I have spare time (Naptime, lunchtime etc.) I´m willing to do housework!

I first started babysitting for this one family 3 years ago. This
summer I'll be their on-call nanny, 30-40 hours a week. When I was just
a babysitter, I always cleaned the kitchen, took out the trash, did the
dishes etc. On top of that, I always had the kids clean their rooms
before they could play. Apparently I made a good impression on the
parents, because here I am 3 years later with the same job. I would
recommend doing little household things if you can manage it,
especially if the mom is really stressed out: it'll make her happy!

Hi there, Is everyone here from America? Im from the UK anyway and the difference between a babysitter and a nanny, well in england anyway is that a babysitter will go to a families house and look after the children for a few hours in the evening while the parents go out, and a nanny would be there all day while the parents are at work and look after them and attend to all their needs and routines etc

I'm working for a family now as a babysitter 20 hrs a week. The family had a full time nanny before who was required to do light housework and the family is now looking for another nanny for when I go back to school. At least for this family light housework for a nanny includes doing the laundry, making the beds, washing the dishes and of course cleaning up after the kids. Personally I think these chores are acceptable as long as the nanny recieves a little extra $ for doing them.

While babysitters only work the occasional evening, nannies have a more routine and regular schedule whether it be part-time or full-time. I'd say if you're with a family 15+ hours/week, you're the children's nanny. Nannies are also typically older, and have more responsibilities. A nanny might pick up the children from school, bring them on play dates with other children, or even take them to doctor's appointments. Nannies often prepare the children's food, and sometimes do their laundry. There are even nannies who do the family's grocery shopping and cook for the entire family, though that starts to go into the realm of being a household manager.
