Warning about honey....

RetiredNanny 11-14-2006, 9:25 AM

I have noticed a few recipes calling for honey but never saw any warning about honey and babies.

Honey should never be fed to children younger than 12 months of age. No matter how small the amount.

Honey can contain a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. This bacteria can grow in an infant's digestive system and release a toxin that causes botulism, a potentially fatal illness.

Wow, thanks for that info about the bacteria.  I had heard it could pose a choking hazard, but this is the first I'm hearing about bacteria.  Thank you.

Yeah, its a scary thing.  It's actually honey and certain nuts.  The woman that I work with (I watch her daughter on the weekends) has told me several times about the honey and nut thing.  Also, if you introduce wheat into their diet at too young of an age, it can give them eczema.
