I'm sorry about the bad babysitters you've encountered. I have to say that most babysitters on this site enjoy their job and are responsible or they would not be willing to learn new things and share their experiences.

I personally have high standards for myself when babysitting. I won't take a job if I know I will be stressed about school or other stuff, or if I will be upset because I could be spending time with my friends. I babysit because I love children and would love to pursue education as a career when I go off to college next year...I don't babysit because I know I  will make money...that is just a benefit.

I hope that you will one day meet at least one babysitter who meets your expectations and cares about your children and their job responsibility. My clients (which number about 15) ask me to babysit regularly and pay me a base rate of $7/hr and an additional $1/hr/child (so 2 children would be $8/hr) because I care for their kids, respect their expectations and have my own high standards.

personally i believe that 12$ an hour is alot even for 4 childern....i dont have a rate i just let the parents pay what they are comfortable with....and i am 13 i usually get $5 an hour for 2 chidern and then the parents pay me extra depending on how they feel or if they have asked me to feed their dogs or help the childern with there homework. I babysat 2 boys for 4 hours one day and i got 30 dollars because i fed their dogs and read to a child for 20 minutes which in my opinion is nothing....and i like reading to kids and it calms them down so it actually helped me a little. Maybe you should try experincing different babysitters and see which one you feel more comfortable with including pay and how they act with your childern and also weather or not you childern enjoy being with them!

I suggest you look for younger sitters. I'm 11 and I get paid five dollars and hour to watch a 1, 3 and 5 year old. Sitters that are around 11, 12, 13, and 14 are great and tipically cheaper! Teenagers can't be as involved with the kids anyway.

I am an babysitter. Im 18. I have had a hard time figuring out how much to charge because I usually have never had to. The parents just pay me reasonably and im fine. When I do have to charge I stick around $8 per hour and $1 per additional child. $10 is too high to charge to me. $12 is pretty high too. However, you have to remember that a babysitter is cleaning up behind, entertaining, dealing with possible confrontation, putting to bed, and cooking for you kids. And for a new babysitter, if they aren't use to your family, things are harder. You don't want to have to pay soo much money but remember, babysitting IS a job!!! Teens have needs & a life just like you do. We have bills to pay and things to pay for. We also give up some of our time to help you out! Also, look into day care. See how much that is per hour per child and compare it to your babysitters charge. More than likely her deal is way better and more sanitary and safer than day care.

You know, you could also sit down at talk with her about it. You know, negotiate?

Price-wise, a daycare is going to be much cheaper per hour.  But you're right as far as the quality of care the children would receive with a private in-home childcare provider -- between the one-on-one attention, access to all of the child's favorite toys, lack of allergenic foods in the cupboard, and removal of the need for pick-up and drop-off -- babysitting does tend to be more worth it.  :)
