I just started babysitting for another family's child and so far, everything has been going great. When I checked the weather forecast, it said that there is a heat advisory warning. (It might go up to 110 F.) The child that I babysit is 6 years old and I'm not sure what I should do to keep him occupied. We went to the library the last time that this happened. Can anyone else give me some ideas? Please?     Report

Sprinkler Hose Pool Icecream or cold treats Lemonade stand Water park Hose Tag Water balloon tag Water balloon darts-make a target and try to hit it with water balloons Play desert Teach him about the desert and the animals that live there Put robes overtop of your clothes and tie small towel around head. Use stick as walking stick. Get one of those desert water container things. And use that stuff to play desert.          Report

Firstly, I am not being paid to keep children "occupied" as if they're nuisances to be kept at bay, but to educate them through entertainment.  Board games are wonderful tools in this regard, and over the centuries many parents have commended many childcare providers for their suggestions, as parents recognize the value of years of previous childcare experience. Perhaps you are new to childcare, but parents and sitters eventually gain a familial relationship (as opposed to an employer-employee relationship), and this special bond enables us to have the freedom to take the initiative to guide children in a positive direction when we are with them.  Parents will often provide childcare providers with the tools necessary to make this happen, and are happy to oblige limited requests, such as a $10 board game. On top of that, board games ARE only $10 if not less. A way could could word it is  tell them he got bored with ones he has, if a birthday is coming up, suggest it to the parent or get it for him yourself as the wonderful  and caring babysit you are or try telling the child about fun board games that you used to like to play that are still manufatured. It will be fine as long as you keep it subtle. BTW, you did make it seem, alicat, that sitting a child is a nussance to you. I suggest if you think that way, childcare is not in your better intrest and maybe McDonalds it your calling instead    Report

I would suggest you look through the newspaper.  There can be some really cool bookstores nearby.  And a lot of times, they have storytimes.  It would be fun to take him to one of those, then maybe go get ice cream.  I DEFINITELY do not suggest you play outside with him.  It's not safe.  You DON'T want to call the parents to tell them yhou had to take their son to the hospital because he had a heat stroke from playing outside!!!    Report
