What I charged for family...was it right?

I'm a 31 year old mother of 4. My last chid has entered into kinder this year so my brother and his girlfriend have asked me to babysit their 3 1/2 month old daughter. I told them that I would charge them $2.00 an hour which they agreed to . They would drop her off at 7am and pick her up at 5:30pm. I watched her Tue.- Fri. for two weeks a total of 70 hours. On the second Friday when I was expected to get paid she (girlfriend) told me she could only pay me $10.00 a day or $1.00 an hour. This led into a big ol argument and me asking her to leave my house. I still did not receive any sort of payment and have yet to hear from my brother. So what I am asking...Did I do the right thing? Should I have not charged as much cause he is my family? What should I do next? PLEASE HELP!!

You don't usually charge family but in this situation it's for more than a few hours every week and you did agree on $2/hr beforehand. You should get in touch with your brother- phone or in person and explain the situation.

You were right. I charge $3.50/hour. They won't get childcare any cheaper than they have it now. You need to have them over, and explain this to them. $1/hour or $10/day is completely bogus!! My mom is going to care for 2 small babies, and her friend who has an in-home daycare said that the on-going rate for childcare is about $150/week for the first child, then $140/week for the second. You're being very reasonable.

It saddens me that it escalated into an argument to the point where you had to kick her out, but it's really nothing that you did wrong -- $2/hour is an ideal rate for a family member for 70 hours/week.
Yes, you need to call your brother and talk to him. If they can't afford it, then they need to pay you in installments -- $35/week for four weeks maybe -- and YOU DO NOT BABYSIT UNTIL THEY'VE PAID-IN-FULL.
