09-30-2007, 3:49 AM theBab=ysitterGirl16 Joined on 09-30-2007 Be nice - I'm new! Can anyone help me out with my problem? I am an experienced babysitter, I am 16, but lately I cant get any jobs! A few years back I was getting tons of response email for sitting oppertunitys but my mom wouldnt let me! Now she says its ok and i get squat! Im older, I have more experience now, i know infant/child cpr & 1st aid and im offering full time care in my own house for kids age 4 months-2 years. i dont post a rate because i dont want parents to not respond because they think my rate is too high! but why am i not getting any responses!?????    Report

I think your rate is too high, so your feeling was right on that -- start at $7-8/hour for one child, and $1/hour for each additional child. When you post an ad, make sure to be clear and concise.  PROOFREAD!  I promise you, this thought actually goes through parents' heads: "If she doesn't care enough to do something as simple using proper punctuation, how do I know she'll pay attention to detail when she's alone with my little ones?"  The two things seem disconnected, but it's an honest concern. Also, do post your rates.  And stick to them -- it's okay to raise your rates down the road, when you take on new clients, but once you give a family a price quote, I strongly recommend sticking to it as long as you care for their kids, unless they're the ones to offer a raise.  (BTW, that logic applies to date night/occasional sitting -- nannies can ask for raises, after 1+ years on the job). *Love in Christ from Mary* 1 Peter 2:4-5 Vote my agency, Seminole Sitters, the "Best Overall Business" in Tallahassee for the 2007 Tally Awards at EverythingTallahassee.com!!!    Report

I'm a little confused - you're offering FT care in your home?  Is it like a home daycare, or babysitting for one family at a time?  And how is it that you can work FT at age 16 - are you homeschooled? Most babysitting is done in the families' homes.  This might be what's preventing families from calling you. And I agree with the suggestion to include your rate information upfront.    Report
