Hello!
My mom has been working at our church daycare for almost a year now, and wants to quit so bad. Kids are brats, teachers sit there and gossip all the time, and she's done. She was talking to a friend who has an in-home daycare, and she told her that she should find 2 babies whose parents need an all day sitter, and care for them out of her home. My mom loves babies, so she decided that she would. Her friend is referring her to parents of newborns because that's what my mom wants. So, she's figured out an area that she'll have all the baby stuff. She's joined a couple freecycle groups, and is hoping for someone to be giving away gates, and pack & plays. Is there anything else she will need to get? She's taking any suggestions.
Thanks!

She needs to look into the regulations you state has for in-home childcare. She may need a business license, and may need to report taxes quarterly. She needs to sit down with the frined-with-an-in-home-daycare and have said friend walk her through it, but she also needs to do her own independent research.
Running an in-home daycare is beyond caring for babies -- it involves recordkeeping, taxes, regulations, state inspections, etc.
She should not jump into this, and I say that with a lot of caution. As a business owner myself, she needs to know that if she messes up, she can jeopardize her family and her own personal finances -- taking the necessary precautions to be sure she's within the law and is not spending more than she makes is important.
Also, it's important to note that if your family relies on her income in any portion, she needs to do a cash flow projection to ensure she'll be taking home the same amount or more than what she currently makes -- otherwise, it doesn't make financial sense to do this.

She talked to a friend, and you don't have to have a business license or anything like that. You have to get a license if you have more than 5 kids. but thats all.
It's not a big deal. She is just doing it for a little extra money. It's not really an "In-Home Daycare" shes just caring for a couple of babies.
