How much for babysitting/nanny rates?
Reply Quote
Hi, I am in NYC (queens)
My friend who is a stay at home mom of 2 (one is 1 years old and the other is 4) is
who is willing to watch my 7 month baby from m-f for 40 hours a week.
This would also be in her home so how much should she ask for?
Since I am dropping him off and it is a share with 2 other kids. The 4 year old does go to school until 3 pm
What is the going rate?? Thanks

A 7 month old is more work than other ages, and she is watching 2 other children but they are hers, if they were someone elses and she was getting a little money from them aswell it might be a bit different.  Everbody has different rates there are some mothers here in victoria that only charge $25 for a full day.  You might want to ask her but If you would like an estimate, I would say maybe $5 an hour.  Most at home mothers charge a little less. Maybe less because of the abundance of hours.
ask her what she charges.

Ask her what she charges but have a rate in mind. I would say $5/hr is reasonable and with a 40 hour week you would be paying  $200/week. However you should provide food and diapers.

I also agree that $5/hour is reasonable.

She is asking $10/hr. Does it really matter that we are in NYC?
And her daughter is in school ft until 3 . I would definitely supply her with diapers.. etc

Thanks

It's up to you but I think that $10/hr is unreasonable. I wouldn't pay anything over $6/hr.

I do not think $10/hr is fair.  That would be $400/week and $1,600/month.  Plus you would be providing diapers and food.  You need to look at your own paycheck and see if it's worth working at that point.  I think $5/hr or $6/hr is more reasonable.  I have a friend who sends her son to a childcare provider (does childcare in her home) and she pays around $180/week for 38 hours.

I think $10 is completely reasonable, and in fact, a really good deal.  Living in NYC does make a difference.  I live in Boston and pay $10/hour for my 14 mo old to go to a stay at home mom's for the day, and she has a two year old, and that is pretty much the going rate.  It is WAY cheaper than a day care center.

if she is a mother and will be doing these (kid) things already, then lower.  It is more work if your child is younger though...
I would say around 8 an hour if you are giving her some good hours.

$10 an hour is totally reasonable for NYC, it's actually on the lower end of the spectrum (I've been baby-sitting in the city all through school). You would definitely pay more for a nanny or daycare. Yeah, she's a mom so she's already doing mom things, but one more person is a lot--especially a little one. If she's doing school pick-up and running errands in NYC fashion (on foot, with a stroller and all needed kid supplies) one more kid is a LOT. I think you're looking at a good deal.

I hope everything works out!

Shamrock obviously knows what she's talking about, so I'd like to rescind my previous answer in order to agree with hers.  :)
