Judging by the last part of your question, I am assuming that you are around 10 years old. I think you are a bit too young to babysitt. Even though you can stay home by yourself, it is a totally different story when you are completely responsible for the well being of another human. Babysitting is not just "watching kids" its taking full responsibility for their saftey, and protecting a parents most valuable thing in their life. You also need to be sure you could handle any emergency that may arrive. I have even babysatt children up to the age of 12. I think that maybe you should start out as a mothers helper around this age and do it for a few years to gain experience, and so you can have references, and get your name around your neighborhood as a babysitter in the future. I also think that if babysitting is something you want to get into, you should definitley sign up for a babysitting training course, and to get certified in child/infant cpr, as well as first aid. As for babysitting, I would wait another year or two, start out mothers helping now, and when you and the parents are comfortable, chances are they will let you start babysitting. Hope this has helped. Good luck!!

I agree with Laura. Before you are entrusted with the life of another, you need to ensure that you are used to taking care of yourself. Being a mother's helper or volunteering at a local daycare or your church's nursery is a wonderful way to familiarize yourself with the basic needs of young children.
When you do start babysitting, I strongly recommend starting with children aged 4 and older, who are not as dependent on their caregivers.
You also should looking into becoming a certified babysitter through the Red Cross or a similar organization, and of course, being trained in CPR and First Aid.

I am 11 and I'm Red Cross certified. I babysit for three kids, 1, 3, and 5 and the mom totally trusts me. I think if you are certified by the Red Cross and parents trust you, 11 is a great age to start!
