It's probably because he's your sibling.  Perhaps you did wonderfully with a set of two 8yo's, but mom may see a little more sibling rivalry between you and your brother than you're willing to admit to yourself.  Or, she simply doesn't want to put you in a position of power over a peer family member, because it could create sibling rivalry in a household that was once peaceful.  Who knows?  Whatever the reason, though -- she's your mom.  If you can't respect and accept your own parents' wishes, you're not going to be a very good babysitter, when babysitting requires following parental instructions for their children.

I agree with Chosen.

She might have a reason that really doesn't have anything to do with you or your skills.

Being a mom myself, I can see where she wouldn't want to cause authority problems with you and your brother. It may also be that your brother misbehaves and she doesn't want him doing that to you. I'm sure she has a reason.

I'm sure if you take a moment to really think about things, you'll see why.

She is your mom, though, so you have to listen even if she tells you no reason, but I do suggest trying to have a talk with her so she can tell you the reason.
